RXMARINE CHEMICAL TAG::
Normal (n-) propyl alcohol is formed as a by-product of the synthesis of methanol (methyl alcohol) from carbon monoxide and hydrogen. It also occurs in fusel oil. Its largest use is as a solvent in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals and in the preparation of lacquers.
- 2-Propanol (Isopropanol) has been used for isolation and quantitative determination of carotenes and xanthophylls from Capsicum annum pericarp extracts by HPLC.
- It has been used as solvent in the dissolution of Pt and TiO2 precursors, for the fabrication of Pt-TiO2/Ti electrodes.
- 2-propanol may be used in the synthesis of methyl isobutyl ketone with satisfactory yield in the presence of bifunctional Cu-base catalysts.
- It can undergo oxidation in the presence of titanium oxide-supported manganese oxide to form acetone
Propanol has a log n-octanol/water partition coefficient of 0.34 ... an oral dose of 1-propanol of 3.75 mg/kg body weight and 1200 mg.
