How to test purity of Ethanol?
Answer

Ethanol is an alcohol with which burns with a blue flame and without smoke. But the main question that arises in your mind is how to find out its purity chemically. So, here we are going to tell you the most easy and accurate steps which have also been performed by RX MARINE INTERNATIONAL in our labs:

 1) JONES REAGENT: Jones Reagent is a mixture of CHROMIUM TRIOXIDE and SULPHURIC ACID. (AVAILABLE IN HUGE STOCK WITH RXMARINE). THE OBSERVATION YOU SEE ARE AS FOLLOWS:

A greenish blue sheet kind structure is formed. A quick note that the product is a sheet kind of structure and not a precipitate. This was the POSITIVE SIGN. The NEGATIVE aspect would be seen when the alcohol doesn't contain a primary alcohol.

2)TRIIODOMETHANE TEST: Take a solution of IODINE AND SODIUM HYDROXIDE and put it in the alcohol solution. The OBSERVATIONS YOU SEE ARE AS FOLLOWS:

If the solution is of ethanol, a very pale coloured ppt will form but if the alcohol was other like propan-1-ol or propan-2-ol, no precipitate is formed but a urine coloured pale yellow SOLUTION is formed.

THERE ARE MANY MORE METHODS TO CHECK THE PURITY LIKE GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY ANDD INFRARED SPECTROSCOPY.
